Indexed vs ranked: what's the difference?

If your site is indexed, it means that you exist on that search engine. And it means that when people search, they might find your website. Ranked, however, is when your site, or one of the pages on your site, ranks for a specific search term.

For instance, if you sell coffee beans in Oklahoma City, you may want people to search for "coffee roasters in Oklahoma City." And you might rank for that search. You might be 50th, 10th, or you might be first, or you might not rank at all.
